Having grown up in Bath, Samantha Harvey moved to Kingston three years ago to study graphic design and photography. The project that is doing the rounds at the moment that first grabbed our attention is Class Portrait (in collboration with Anna Brooks) that has recently won Best in New Blood and a 2nd prize pencil in the D&AD student awards.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I really liked pandas so I expect it was something to do with them.
In reflection, how bad was your work in first year?
It was certainly very different, but the first year of Kingston is crazy, it’s all a bit of a blur now but I remember doing a lot of performances for projects and group work which was completely new to me at the time. We were all definitely thrown straight in the deep end from the very beginning, I really enjoyed it but have definitely come on a long way since then.
If you could show a piece of your folio to one person, what piece would you choose and who would you show it to?
It would be the Class Portrait project because it always gets people talking and everyone always has an opinion about it. I would love to show it to anyone who works at Hotshoe Magazine because I think what they do is incredible and I have been very inspired by the work they show in their magazine, because you really get to know what the photographs are about, what the concept is and why the photographer has wanted to make their work.
If you had your own studio, who would you share it with and why?
It would have to be some of the people I have graduated with from Kingston this year who studied Graphic Design/Graphic Design and Photography, because I know we would all work hard and want to have strong concepts and ideas behind our work, and these are the kind of people I would want to be around and work with if I had my own studio.
If you’ve got any left, what will you spend the last of your student loan on?
Rent and iced coffees
Where will be find you in 12 months?
I’ve absolutely no idea, I tend not to know what I’m doing next week let alone next year, but I plan to still be creating work I want to do with people I enjoy working with.
